TikTok Offers Viewers Control to Decrease Artificial Intelligence-Made Content in Their Feeds

The platform is rolling out a fresh option that enables them to lessen the quantity of AI-created media appearing in their feeds. This move comes as the service disclosed that it now features more than 1 billion AI-generated clips.

Testing and Rollout

The new functionality is in a pilot phase over the next few weeks before a widespread release. This advancement comes amid a rise in AI content, spurred by recent video-generation tools.

The Broader AI Trend

Recent reports that approximately a tenth of the quickest rising content creators on a competing service exclusively feature AI-generated videos. A large amount of this output is classified as “AI slop”, a term for poor-quality, factory-style content that is frequently absurd or dreamlike.

Our research shows that many people appreciate content made with AI tools, including computer-generated images to educational videos, and we intend to give people the option to adjust the amount of that, depending on their own preferences,” said a platform representative.

Scale of AI Content

TikTok disclosed that there are presently over a billion videos on its network labeled as artificially created. In total, over 100 m videos are uploaded to the app each day, making AI content a minor percentage of its total content library.

User Control Features

Members will be in a position to reduce or increase the amount of artificial media they view by accessing the content preference option in the platform and selecting “AI-generated content”. Other topics that currently be adjusted under the filter include current affairs, style, aesthetics, and choreography.

Platform Guidelines

The platform’s policies require content makers to tag “realistic” artificially created content, and it prohibits malicious AI impersonations of well-known individuals or emergencies. Any realistic artificial content that is not labeled can be removed under its user guidelines.

In addition, the service will henceforth add an “AI-made” label to content made using its built-in AI features, or flagged by an industry-wide initiative for identifying content made by AI. This step is intended to deter users from seeking to evade the disclosure requirement.

AI Literacy Programs

TikTok is also introducing a $2 million awareness program for specialists and institutions to produce educational content about responsible artificial intelligence. This project will support charitable organizations specializing in educating programming and robotics.

Content Safety Approach

The platform has defended its content review process, during discussion over plans to make redundant hundreds of safety staff in the United Kingdom. The company is set to eliminate 439 jobs in its content moderation team in London, with labor groups and digital protection specialists expressing worry that people are being substituted by AI moderation.

A trust and safety lead clarified that human moderation would still have a role, but AI can safeguard staff by eliminating the most graphic content before it is viewed by people. The platform stated a significant reduction in shocking and graphic content handled by content reviewers over the previous year due to the use of its AI tools.

We believe it is crucial to integrate humans and technology to ensure user safety,” she said. “We’ll have humans as involved in the system, but we further consider it’s extremely critical to reduce exposure to dangerous material as swiftly, which is where a lot of the machine support is really helping us work at speed.”
